Description

The Boston University URBAN Graduate Program prepares Ph.D. students from the Biogeoscience (Biology and Earth & Environment), Environmental Health, and Math & Statistics departments to tackle urban environmental challenges using interdisciplinary methods and a co-production approach centered on partnerships with governments, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector. Our graduate program aims to create a diverse workforce of scientists and practitioners equipped with the technical knowledge and communication skills necessary for building a sustainable, healthy, and equitable future. URBAN trainees focus on a variety of important research topics such as equity in urban green space and water and air quality, and have influenced environmental policy and/or practices at the city, state, regional, and national level.

Donations are applied to...

Donations will be used for program funding, which provides participants with opportunities such as Research and Travel Awards and Broadening Participation Awards. The awards support interdisciplinary research on urban environmental challenges, travel to professional conferences and meetings to present research, and development of professional networks. URBAN’s Broadening Participation in STEM Awards sponsor URBAN trainees' public engagement efforts and outreach to under-represented groups. With the support of URBAN funding, trainees have attended the National Diversity in STEM Conference in Puerto Rico, which is hosted by the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS), the largest multidisciplinary and multicultural STEM diversity event in the country. These opportunities are possible because of donations from supporters like you. Click here for our interview with the trainees who attended the conference this year.

Why are donations necessary?

Your donation helps us sustain the program and to tackle urban environmental challenges such as climate change, improving air and water quality, and developing green spaces in Boston and other urban areas. Visit our Internship Impacts Page to see more of the positive change that our trainees have brought about through their research and partnerships with government entities, the private sector, and community-based organizations.

By making a contribution of any denomination, you are joining BU URBAN in addressing urban environmental challenges and promoting environmental justice. If you are unable to donate at this time, please support us by sharing our fundraising efforts with those in your networks.

  • $2,000 will provide an URBAN Broadening Participation Award for trainees to engage in research and collaborations that advance equity, inclusion, and access around urban environmental issues and to help with recruitment efforts for underrepresented groups in STEM

  • $2,500 will provide an URBAN Research Award so a trainee can conduct interdisciplinary research in Biogeoscience and Environmental Health addressing a pressing urban environmental challenge
